QUIK-BRIK Installation

Laying Masonry Walls
Lay units using the best concrete masonry practices. Install only quality units, reject all defective units. Align units level, plumb, and true with uniform, carefully tooled 3/8″ wide joints on the finished side of the wall. Tool joints when mortar is thumb-print hard. Draw blocks from two or more pallets at a time during installation. Type N mortars are recommended for veneer construction. Type S mortars are recommended for through wall/load -bearing construction.

Installation
Sills, copings and chimney caps of solid masonry units, stone, reinforced concrete, or corrosion resistant metal are to be used. To be most effective, masonry, stone, concrete sills, copings and chimney caps should project beyond the face of the wall; have drips that are at least 1 inch (25mm) from the face of the wall, and have functional flashing and weep holes. In addition, all sills, copings and chimney caps should be sloped a minimum of 1:4; be mechanically anchored to the wall, and should have properly sized, located, and sealed movement joints when necessary.
Lighting: Provide adequate lighting for masonry installation by placing all lighting a reasonable distance from the wall for even illumination. Do not use trough permanent lighting.
Cutting: Make all unit cuts, including those for bonding, holes, boxes, etc., with motor-driven masonry saws, using either an abrasive or diamond blade.
Cut neatly for best appearance.
Joints: All mortar joints shall be tooled concave joints.

Inspection
The facing shall be free from chips, cracks, crazes or any other imperfections that would detract from the overall appearance of the finished wall when viewed from a distance of fifteen (15) feet at right angles to the wall with normal lighting.

Flashing of Masonry Work
Install flashing at locations shown in the plans and in strict accordance with the details and the best masonry flashing practices. Functional, un-punctured flashing and weep holes are to be used: base of wall above grade, above openings in wall, shelf angles, lintels, wall-roofing intersections, chimneys, bay windows, and below window sills and copings. The flashing should be extended beyond the exterior face of the wall. The flashing should have end dams at its discontinuous ends, and properly sealed splices and laps at its joints.

Installation Recommendations
For 4″ exterior concrete masonry a complimentary or matching mortar color is recommended when using Quik-Brik units.
Control joints are recommended approximately every twenty (20) feet, at inside corners, not more than 10 feet from one of the exterior corners, at jambs of windows or at change of heights. Application of Dow Corning sealant #495 is recommended at vertical joints.

Installation Requirements
Continuous horizontal 4″ ladder joint reinforcement is required in the exterior wythe every 16″‘, IN ADDITION to the adjustable joint reinforcement. For single wythe construction, it is recommended that a field applied water repellent sealer be applied to Harvard Brik installations after the final cleandown, and applied according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Limitations
The facing is not intended for use as an impervious surface.
Acid solutions should not be used as a cleaning agent or in direct contact with the facing.

Integral Water-Repellent Admixture
Description: An integral liquid polymeric admixture mixed with concrete during production of concrete masonry units which becomes an integral part of the cement matrix being locked into the concrete masonry unit or bond beam to provide resistance to water penetration to achieve a Class E Rating as stated in E514-74 when tested in accordance with ASTM E514 for 72 hours.

Mortar Admixtures
Description: An integral liquid polymeric admixture designed specifically for use in a mortar mix, which becomes an integral part of the cement matrix being locked into the mortar to provide resistance to water penetration, achieving a Class E Rating when tested in a wall section in accordance with ASTM 514.
